FAQs

Anyone who has worked in Austria in the last 5 years, specifically from 2020 to 2024, can apply for a tax refund. The prerequisite is, of course, employment in Austria during those years.

Did you not work in Austria for the entire year? Are you, for example, a seasonal worker? You are entitled to a tax refund regardless.

It is also important to mention that you can apply for a tax refund even if you are no longer working or residing in Austria. You can do so up to 5 years retroactively.

IMPORTANT! The tax return for 2020 can only be submitted until December 31, 2025. If interested, please contact us as soon as possible. Are you interested in submitting a tax return through us? Fill out our online form, and we will take care of the rest, ensuring you have as few worries as possible.

As an employee, you will be able to apply for a tax refund for the year 2025 starting from January 1, 2026. We will practically be able to perform this service for you from March 1, 2026. Your employer is obliged to submit your documents to the Austrian tax office (Finanzamt) by February 28. Therefore, we are still eagerly awaiting this date, as it is possible that some of your payslips might be submitted to the Finanzamt by your employer later, which could affect the amount of your tax refund.

At Only Tax, we strive to simplify the process of your tax return and related matters as much as possible.

One of our advantages is that you do not need to prepare almost any documents. You do not need to provide us with your payslips. To submit a tax return through us, you mainly need to fill out our online contact form, which you can find on our website or we will gladly send it to you.

If you are a tax resident of Slovakia, we will also require you to have filed a Slovak tax return and have the E9 form confirmed by the tax office for the given year. Have you not filed a Slovak tax return or applied for the E9 form? We would be happy to take care of that for you.

Yes, with us it is possible to submit a tax return even without an ID Austria set up.

With the help of an official Austrian tax advisor, we can process your tax return even without so-called two-factor authentication. Furthermore, you can claim the costs for processing the tax return in this tax return.

We will communicate with you until a decision is made regarding your submitted tax return by the Austrian authority.

We have been active in the field of Austrian tax returns and family allowances for almost 10 years.

We have extensive experience in communicating with the Austrian tax office, known as Finanzamt. If necessary, an Austrian Steuerberater (tax advisor) communicates with the Finanzamt on your behalf, which is a significant advantage.

The area of taxes is very sensitive, as it involves working with your hard-earned money. It is therefore important to entrust this service to someone who is a professional in the field and whom you can truly trust. We cooperate with official tax advisors, both on the Slovak and Austrian sides.

Not everyone is technically inclined. With us, you do not necessarily need to have ID Austria set up and so-called two-factor authentication, which will save you a lot of time and worries.

If you entrust your taxes to us, in your tax return, you can claim the costs for our services as so-called Steuerberatungskosten (tax advisory fees).

We naturally answer your simple inquiries free of charge. Through years of working with people, we have understood that clients are diverse, which is why we have decided to adapt our services to meet everyone’s needs. On our website, you will find up to 4 different packages in our price list, from which you can choose. These include the Basic, Complete, VIP, and also the Special package. Each package includes a description of the services covered by its price. Clients have the option to change their package until the tax return is submitted.

For our loyal clients, this year we offer a 10% discount until June 30, 2026.

Yes, in practice, it can happen that after submitting your tax return, the Austrian Finanzamt sends you a so-called Ergänzungsernsuchen, which is essentially a request for additional documents or further information.

Whether the Austrian tax office requests these documents or not cannot be determined in advance. It is important to remember that every such request for additional information has a specific deadline, meaning a concrete date by which the Finanzamt must be answered. This deadline can also be extended through us for a fee, if necessary.

In the event that the Austrian tax office requires any further information or documents from you, we will, of course, inform you about this and agree on the next steps.

The amount of your tax overpayment or so-called tax refund is influenced by several factors. These mainly include the amount of your income in Austria, the amount of income outside Austria (for example, in Slovakia), the amount of taxes paid on your behalf by your employer in Austria, your expenses incurred while working in Austria, the number of your children, commuting to work, tax bonuses, and much more. With us, even before submitting your tax return, we can tell you exactly what specific amount of tax refund you are entitled to.

After filling out our online form, we will contact you immediately by phone or email in case of any ambiguities. Your tax return will be processed by us within a few business days.

Subsequently, after submitting your tax return and sending it to the Austrian tax office, the so-called Finanzamt, further processing of this application usually takes several days to weeks.

The maximum period reserved by law is 6 months and is highly individual. The processing time for your taxes “on the Austrian side” often depends on the specific employee of the Austrian tax office. This period can be shorter or longer.

The subject of tax for a Slovak Republic resident is, according to the valid Income Tax Act, income flowing from sources within the territory of the Slovak Republic, as well as from foreign sources, so-called worldwide income.

For this reason, it is necessary to process and file a tax return in Slovakia even if the result of the tax for Slovakia is completely zero. Without a filed tax return, it is not possible to obtain form E9, which is very important for us.

Yes. Very often, the Austrian tax office requires confirmation of your worldwide income, which is the so-called E9 form. The Slovak tax office will issue this to you as a confirmed document, but only based on a submitted Slovak tax return. This form is a mandatory attachment to the application for a tax refund from Austria if you have permanent residence in Slovakia. The Austrian Finanzamt uses this form to verify the amount of your income from other EU countries.

It can also happen that the Austrian tax office may request the E9 form of your spouse or partner, specifically when we request to claim the single-parent tax bonus in the tax return.

Do you need help requesting the E9 form from the Slovak Tax Office or even submitting a Slovak tax return? We will do it for you, just contact us.
